Time lapse bean germination

Check out this cool clip. It is of some bean seeds germinating. We used this as a tool to help us in our writing

What does a seed need to germinate?

In High 5 we wanted to find out what a seed needs to germinate so tried some different conditions.
Control
  • 130.jpgWe wet the paper towel and put it around the inside of the jar (like a cylinder).
  • We put the beans in the jar (one on each side) between the damp paper towel and the glass jar – we want the sun to touch the beans.
Dry
  • We put the paper towel around the inside of the jar (like a cylinder).
  • We put the beans in the jar (one on each side) between the paper towel and the glass jar – we want the sun to touch the beans.
Dark
  • We wet the paper towel and put it around the inside of the jar (like a cylinder).
  • We put the beans in the jar (one on each side) between the damp paper towel and the glass jar – we want the sun to touch the beans.
  • We wrapped a cover of black paper around the jar so the sun cannot touch the seed.
Soil
  • We collected soil from the school vege garden and put about 3 cm in our jar.
  • We wet the paper towel and put it around the inside of the jar (like a cylinder).
  • We put the beans in the soil in the jar. We covered the beans (they are planted).
Cold
  • We wet the paper towel and put it around the inside of the jar (like a cylinder).
  • We put the beans in the jar (one on each side) between the damp paper towel and the glass jar – we want the sun to touch the beans.
  • We put the jar in the fridge (on the top shelf at the back)

Observations: WALT: observe what happens
We looked closely and recorded our observations in very careful diagrams.
Conclusions: (what I think) WALT: share our ideas
  • The seed in the fridge germinated very slowly. The dry seed did nothing. The control (damp and light) geminated and has green leaves. The seed in the dark germinated and the leaves are yellow. We don’t think this will grow very big. The seed in the soil geminated first and it is a healthy green plant. We think this will grow the biggest.
  • A seed needs water to germinate.
A plant needs water, sun (feeds the food factory in the leaves) and soil to keep growing big and strong.

Brunch time in the sun

We are working together to try and make a hola hoop caterpillar. How can we all join together? We had to do loads of talking and thinking to try and make sure everyone who wanted to be was included. How did we do?



Buddy Reading

We are learning about excellence this term. We are showing excellence inside the classroom and outside the classroom. This means we try our very best and never give up, even when it is really hard! Dice patterns

We are learning to count on to solve addition problems. This means we hold one number in our heads and then count on the rest. It can be tricky to know when to stop...
We are practising solving problems like this.

Jamie has 18 lollies and Charlotte gives her 4 more. Then Zoe gives her 6 more. Now how many lollies does Jamie have?
We start with 18 becasue it is the biggest number and we hold the 18 in our head. Then we use what we know about dice patterns to help count on 6 more, then 4 more.

Jamie has 28 lollies. Lucky Jamie!

Do plants Breathe?

WALT: make predictions
WALT: observe what happens

We are thinking like scientists. “Scientists ask questions and carry out investigations…”
We ask a question and then try to find out the answer. We think about what might happen and make predictions. Then we look really closely at what is happening to make our observations. We use what we have learned to try and answer our question.

Toby “Plants can breathe through the dirt because the dirt is nice and loose”

Method
  • We went to the playground and picked some leaves.
  • We put some water in a plastic container
  • Then we put the leaf into the container and pushed it under the water
  • We left the container very still in the sun on the deck57.jpg

Observations
There are lots of air bubbles on the leaf.
Some leaves had bigger bubbles than others.

What do we think (conclusions)
Leaves do breathe… We could see air bubbles on the leaves.

What next
We found a red leaf… “I wonder if it will breathe” said Awhina, Emily and Heidi. High 5 think it might breathe. Carter is not so sure, “It is red and almost winter. Autumn makes the leaves red and fall off the trees. It’s when they are dead”.

Did the read leaf breathe? Not many air bubbles. May be a little.

We don’t think the brown crinkly leaves are going to breathe. They’re dead.
